I grew up in Northwest Indiana in the city of Crown Point. My dad’s side of the family came over from Greece and my dad’s father opened the Beauty Spot restaurant in Gary, IN in 1936 of which my dad and Uncle John later ran for several years (and before anyone asks no I’m sorry I never learned Greek). I am not going into my whole family history but this is an important piece in my story as this restaurant was open for 54 years, it left a legacy in the community; and it played a big part in my childhood. Fast forward… Purdue University partnered with Radisson Star Plaza in Merrillville, IN for a series of seminars to high school students about different careers within the hospitality industry and promoting the hospitality program at Purdue. Between the program itself and a special lady facilitating the sessions Theresa Eloff, I had decided I wanted to pursue a degree in the hospitality industry at Purdue University, but hotels…not restaurants. Now I should mention that my family has a lot of Purdue history that kicked off with my Grandpa (mom’s dad) being a graduate of the Class of 1950 in Civil Engineering and then my mom and dad met at Purdue, two of my cousins went there and I have a another cousin there now. As you can see outside of Andrew and my personal story Purdue holds a special place in our family’s hearts.
